Paul(Gazza)Gascoigne first played for Redheugh u13s way back in season 1979/80, the team that year played in an u14 league as at that time they were no u13 leagues. The following season 1980/81 the team joined the newly formed Gateshead youth league at u14s and what a season they had. Paul and his team mates went on to win 5 trophies that season. The league, The League cup, County cup, Gateshead youth league 5-A-Side and the County -Cup-5-A-Side.
Not long after Paul left Redheugh to take up his professional career with Newcastle United but plenty of clubs were chasing him at the time i-e Middlesboro and Ipswich Town were among his admirers but in the end he chose Newcastle United.

As a young player his trademark was his close control that was evident at an early age as i remember also most times when i would see Paul at the club every night even then he would have a football at his feet practising all his tricks and control . People ask me now that was he like to work with. The answer brilliant never a dull moment, he was a natural and as his coach he was easy to work with as all he wanted to do was play football.

Paul has never forgetting his roots and was always visiting the club . One year when he was a young player at Newcastle he came back to do the clubs presentation and when playing for Lazio in Italy rang me up and offered to help the club purchase a mini-bus which he said he would pay for in lira what a gesture that was.

My Greatest memory of Paul was when he played for England at Italia 90 he was so proud to be playing for England, The white shirt, Three lions on his chest he loved every second. Then came the booking against Germany which would have kept him out of the final. I know how much it would have meant to him. Well its all history now.

Paul from everyone at Redheugh Boys Club. We are all praying you are doing well and making a massive effort to help yourself. You have given myself and the club so much joy and entertainment over the years from a junior player a professional and then to an England International, so as a club we sent you all our love and wish you a speedy recovery.

Terry Ritson.
